Dr. Joshua Reuben Ramsammy died yesterday morning after a long illness. He was 85.
Dr. Ramsammy is remembered as a Guyanese with a long history of political struggle whom many regard as a Guyanese hero. He rose to fame when an attempt was made on his life outside the Guyana National Cooperative Bank in 1971. Gunmen approached his car and fired a number of shots at him one of which damaged his lungs. He was rushed to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital where an emergency operation was performed by his brother, a surgeon.
At the time Dr. Ramsammy was the chairman of the radical union, University of Guyana Workers’ Union, a leading member of an anti-Government organization, the Movement Against Oppression, and a leading light in another group named Ratoon.
The consensus of opinion at the time was that his radical activism may have been the reason for the attempted assassination.
The Movement Against Oppression later became integrated into the Working People’s Alliance where Dr. Ramsammy stood out as one of its strongest leaders. He was also one of the WPA’s representatives in the Patriotic Coalition for Democracy formed in the eighties to confront the Forbes Burnham Government.
Kaieteur News will carry a follow up on Dr. Ramsammy with comments from those who were involved with him in the long battle to win free and fair elections in Guyana.
