Digicel joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Food Day 2008 by supporting the Dharm Shala. Employees took the day off on Thursday to spend the day with inmates and provide lunch for the many poor and destitute persons that live at the Dharm Shala. In addition, the company also made a monetary contribution to assist with the administration of the home.
Digicel Head of Marketing, Donovan White, said: “In the face of rising food prices everywhere, and the increasing difficulty for some families to get three square meals daily, the poor and unfortunate are certainly feeling the strain more than anyone else, and Digicel is pleased to provide a meal for the sixty inmates that are fed daily at the Dharm Shala.”
Co-ordinator of the Dharm Shala and granddaughter of the founding father, Kella Ramsaroop, thanked Digicel for its support.
Ramsaroop said: “World Food Day is a very important day around the world. Millions of people don’t get one meal a day, even persons right here in Guyana. We at the Dharm Shala believe that everyone has the right to food and shelter.”
The Dharm Shala is a charitable organisation devoted to the poor, destitute and unfortunate of Guyana. The organisation has been providing food and shelter for the less fortunate for over eighty years.
