Investigations by the Ministry of Education have uncovered a massive embezzlement scheme at primary schools on the Essequibo Coast and the West Coast of Demerara, resulting in disappearance of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The money has reportedly been embezzled by teachers who target the Schools’ Thrift Society Fund (STSF).
The STSF is a scheme that enables students to save money throughout their tenure at the school, and upon completion, they collect their savings.
The investigation was unearthed when a student at a primary school attempted to collect the money and it was discovered that no money was in the fund.
A report was made to the Regional Education Officer, and the investigation was launched. According to a source in the Ministry of Education, the investigation will be extended countrywide.
Minister within the Ministry of Education, Dr Desrey Fox, declined to comment, until tomorrow, when she would have had the relevant information at hand.
President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Colwyn King, said that the issue was not brought to the attention of the union.
He contended that if any investigations were being conducted regarding teachers, then the union should have been involved.
