The teaching ability of teachers and the learning capabilities of students at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre are expected to be significantly boosted with the provision of the Digital Subscribers’ Link (DSL) service which was donated to the entity yesterday by telecommunication giant, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T).
GT&T’s Public Relations Officer, Ms Allison Parker, said that the donation comes as part of the desire of the entity to embrace the theme of the recently observed World Telecommunications Day which focused on “connecting people with disability.”
GT&T thought that it was fitting to render the assistance after an appeal was made by the centre for the service to bridge the divide between students that are able and those that are disabled, Ms Parker said. “We are glad to make this presentation this morning (yesterday) and though it is simple it is very significant,” she noted.
She also disclosed that yesterday’s undertaking was not the first such assistance rendered by GT&T since a similar donation was made to the National Commission on Disability last year.
“GT&T is always glad to obligate to its social responsibility…We hope it will be utilised by the students who are challenged in one way or another…,” Parker added.
Head of the Rehabilitation Centre, Mr Anand Mangru, expressed satisfaction at the gesture, noting that it will go a long way toward helping the students develop life skills.
According to him, the service will motivate the students further in the field of Information Technology which will in essence develop their knowledge capacity and even lead to them becoming employable.
He also speculated that access to ideas and a wide range of resources will become available and accessible to teachers too.
Mangru said that he is optimistic that the donation will prove to be an immense assistance in helping the entire entity by boosting the confidence and ability of individuals.
The ceremonial handing over of the service was held in a computer room in the top flat of the centre but the service, Parker said, will be extended to the entire entity.
