Guyanese can look forward to inventive activities during the observance of Tourism
Awareness Month 2014. At the launch this past Thursday night, it was announced that the month of November will be filled with countless activities that will increase awareness for Guyana’s tourism industry. The event was hosted at the Amerindian Village in the Sophia Exhibition Complex. It was stated that some of the activities will include bird watching tours in the Botanical Gardens, sport fishing, the South Rupununi Safari and Rupununi Expo, along with the introduction of the Restaurant Week.
The latter was touted as a ‘culinary experience’ which will showcase the absolute best that Guyanese cuisine has to offer. Restaurant Week, according to the Chairman of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) Shaun McGrath, will have restaurants offer inexpensive deals to their patrons.
“We will see restaurants with special pricing that will be dramatically lower than normal,” explained McGrath. He related that the introduction of this project was due to the success of similar initiatives around the world.
“In New York, Restaurant Week was such a huge success that it carried over to a second week. It is hoped that Guyana will receive the same success,” said McGrath. Restaurant Week will be held from November 10 to 16.
The THAG Chairman also announced that the organization has plans of launching a social media campaign. This campaign is aimed at improving booking services for tourists to the country. Moreover it was said by McGrath that this initiative will contribute to the larger “Guyana Homecoming 2015” campaign.
According to Minister of Tourism, Irfaan Ali, “Guyana Homecoming 2015” will focus on appealing to overseas based Guyanese to revisit their homeland.
The Minister said that if the campaign is a success then the sector can see the return of up to 100,000 Guyanese, who will contribute to the Tourism Industry, thus reminding citizens of the importance that the industry has in developing the country’s economy.
Meanwhile, a tourism ambassador’s programme will be introduced to multiple sectors of the industry. The THAG official elaborated that it was modeled after a similar Trinidadian initiative. The ambassador’s programme will incorporate local and international Guyanese figures. It will even integrate a student exchange programme between Guyana and Brazil in the near future.
The ambassador’s programme falls under another tourism campaign: “Guyana, South America Undiscovered”. It is targeted at fostering international interest for Guyana as the destination with “two experiences in one,” according to the Minister.
To increase awareness, the Tourism Ministry has also planned educational programmes. These programmes are directed at schools and are titled as ‘School Talks’ in the Ministry’s agenda.
Yesterday officially began observations for the month. To welcome the month THAG, along with the Ministry of Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) unveiled this year’s theme. Tourism Awareness Month will be observed under the theme “Tourism Entrepreneurship and Awareness Mobilized”.
