– Political games places region’s development in limbo – AFC
Region Ten Councilor, Mr. Audwin Rutherford of the political opposition party; Alliance For Change (AFC), at a press briefing yesterday lambasted Central Government for their ‘evident” neglect of the district.
During his presentation at the Side Walk Café on Middle Street, he spoke to several issues affecting the province.
He then in a most assertive manner, pioneered the call for an immediate improvement of the educational facilities and programmes offered in the Region. He then reminded that the Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region Ten) area is known for being a basin of untapped resources.
But be that as it may, he stressed that the area continues to be stifled by government’s plans which have been poorly executed and have only induced thus far a state of underdevelopment in the Region.
The people of the Region continue to be stifled by poverty and other critical issues. And according to Rutherford, the AFC will not stand idly by and allow this “violation and undermining of the growth of the people” to continue.
Committed to fighting for the betterment of the people of the Region, the AFC member expressed that while they call on the Government to make a change in their behavior and attitude towards the area it has already outlined its own solutions to some of the problems by which it is affected.
He noted too that Linden itself represents an irony in that the people are sitting on a minefield with the Government giving them plans that are only steering them down the steep slope of an economic depression.
He added, “What Linden affords in terms of tertiary education is terrible and on the educational front, the Government and the Minister of Education (Ms. Priya Manickchand) in particular, need to address this issue.”
He also alluded to the fact that the Central Government continues to treat the people of the Region as though they are not cognizant of their existence. “It is clear that there is no intention towards the development of Linden and this has changed immediately.
It is time that these terribly written plans are reformed and they stop treating the people of Linden as though they don’t exist.”
As it relates to the social economic development of the Region, he categorically stated that there needs to be a change in the approach to the construction of roads, housing distribution, as well as the construction of meaningful facilities that adequately promote sports.
“Our party represents over ten percent of the Region and we continue to hear the outcries of the people of the area and they all spell out that the people feel neglected. It is clear that the Government has no intention to set up any kind of infrastructure in Linden, but noticeable are the other facilities which are being constructed in other areas.
We are worried; and when the people of the Region observe the government’s actions in other areas around the country, they feel they are not worth something.”
“We want to be a part of monitoring process of contracts. We also want housing distribution to be done in a systematic way. We also want a discourse to take place on business and investment in the Region.”
“The political games that are being played by Government must end now as they continue to serve to stagnate the Region.”
