‘Why didn’t they do this over the August vacation’-Parents
Parents and teachers of St. Pius Primary School were frustrated yesterday after arriving at school
and finding the school compound in a state of disarray.
Contractors who started work on the new wing at the St. Pius Primary over the weekend dug ditches and started to demolish an old structure. These works should have been conducted over the August holidays.
Irate parents said that it is ludicrous to start construction after the August school holidays, since children can be injured from the gaping holes in the earth caused by the foundations that were dug, along with the steel and other materials that are left lying around the compound.
One mother said that a child was injured while walking towards the school building. The young lad fell into one of the holes and injured his mouth.
“I don’t want my child getting injured in this school. Who is going to be held responsible?” According to Head Mistress, Jane Carter, when she turned up for work she discovered that the school compound was in a state of disorder caused by construction workers.
“I left the school Friday and there was no sign of construction happening. Nobody called to notify me about anything that was taking place,” she said.
The Headmistress noted that she has had to relocate seven classrooms to East La Penitence Primary School to facilitate the present construction.
Adding that there are approximately 740 students attending that school, Miss Carter said many parents and students were confused about what was taking place when they arrived at the school yesterday.
The Ministry of Education, when contacted, said that no complaint was made pertaining to the issue.
