– $500M works to start soon
Government has announced that works to construct a four-lane highway on a section of the East Coast Demerara roadway should get underway, shortly.
The project will see a four-lane roadway to extend the existing structure from Plaisance/Better Hope to Golden Grove. The four-lane highway currently extends from J.B. Singh Highway on the outskirts of Central Georgetown, to Plaisance.
That East Coast Demerara corridor has been under increasing pressure as more and more vehicles enter the country.
It is the main road link between Demerara and Berbice and the numerous villages and farms that dot the coastlands along that corridor.
Government says an estimated 10,000 vehicles are being registered annually, most of them for the countries in eastern Guyana.
According to Government spokesman, Dr. Roger Luncheon, on Wednesday, the initial works will cost around $500M of public funds.
“Funds have already been identified for the initial mapping, excavation and drainage works needed to be undertaken during the construction of the four lane highway. Most of the work that you would see being done initially would be on the northern side where the extension would provide for the four-lane road more readily available then on the southern side,” Dr. Luncheon stated.
The Cabinet Secretary said that the actual road construction would be tendered out to local contractors.
The standard cost for a mile of roadway is US$5 million. Dr Luncheon said that from past experience the extension to the road should cost less with the money coming from the public treasury.
Government is also currently considering designs to extend the four lanes of the East Bank Demerara roadway to Diamond also. Almost US$20M is available for that project.
