A taxi driver is currently in police custody on the West Coast Demerara assisting with investigation following a fatal accident at Orangestein, East Bank Essequibo.
Reports are that some time around 09:00 hours yesterday 53-year-old Steve Albert Rogers of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
This newspaper was told that motor car HB 7753 was heading west along the road when it lost control, ended up on the northern side of the road, struck a bridge and a container that was on the road.
A four-year-old child who was also a passenger in the car was injured, while the driver Oswald Boston escaped unhurt.
Meanwhile the dead man’s wife, Juliet Harris-Rogers said that her husband who is a trader in the Pomeroon River for more than 15 years, left their home early yesterday morning for one of his regular trips to purchase ground provision.
The woman added that her husband would purchase the ground provision in the Pomeroon and return to the city to sell.
“This morning a stallholder from Parika called me and told me that my husband was in an accident.”
Mrs. Rogers said when she arrived at the Leonora Cottage Hospital she saw her husband’s lifeless body. The woman said that she did not know the child who was with her husband at the time of his death.
She said that she learnt that someone had asked her husband to take the child to his relative back in the Pomeroon.
Back at the man’s home yesterday relatives were overcome with grief. They were weeping uncontrollably and had to be consoled by neighbours.
Up to press time the driver of the car was still in police custody assisting with investigations.
