Guyana Goldfields on Thursday last presented a cheque to Deputy Toshao Bridget McWatt of Batavia Village in Region Seven as part of the company’s commitment to supporting a multi-cultural Guyana.
September is Amerindian Heritage Month and the villages of Batavia, Dog Point, Riversview, Karrau and Agatash will be celebrating the occasion today with a pageant and competitions covering a variety of indigenous activities.
Residents and friends of these five communities will be testing their skills against each other in swimming, archery, cassava scraping, a piwari drinking race and a Tuma pot competition.
This will be followed by the main event which is the Lower Mazaruni Cuyuni Amerindian Heritage Pageant where nine beauties representing the five villages will vie for the crown. The opening ceremony will be held at Batavia and activities will end very late in the day.
The cheque presented by Guyana Goldfields will support these Amerindian Heritage Month activities as well as a community project of the choosing by the residents of Batavia through the Batavia Community Development Council.
