On the eve of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Electoral Congress incumbent President Wayne Forde once again in his usual style attempted to pull a fast one on the electorate.
The announcement of Danish company Blue Water Shipping’s desire to construct a stadium at Durban Park while most welcomed is another predictable ploy to win the support of the voters at today’s Congress.
The embattled GFF Head who was forced to reinstate the four members that were previously debarred from voting in today’s Congress appears to be in a mad rush to impress the electorate.
Forde, who has been blamed for the current state of local football, somehow believes that the release of such a proposed huge undertaking might be enough to sway voters his way.
First, the size of the project should have engaged the presence of the media especially when smaller projects have their pens and cameras. The other point of note, is why, would a company with that reputation take the risk of inking an agreement less than twenty-four hours before elections with the outcome not known.
It seems to be a strange move that boggles the mind. However, it is hoped that a new administration would not be bound by any contract signed by the current Federation one day before its electoral congress.
The act can be interpreted as unethical and unfair. Forde’s behaviour over the eight years of being in office has been described as a failure and no amount of coercion at this stage should be able to change the hearts of voters’ endorsement of the challenging slate.
They must also be mindful of his attempt to reign for three more terms following the amendment of the constitution. All are signs of his further descent into autocratic leadership, a pattern that should not be tolerated by the football fraternity.
The focus should be to elect an executive that will have an open-door policy to engage stakeholders while transparency, stability, and accountability must be uncompromising tenets of the new executive.
