Dear Editor,
Construction of new roads and maintenance of those in existence seem to be a colossal problem throughout the length and breadth of Guyana. People are crying foul in many areas about bad roads, in new housing communities and those that have been in existence for many years. It’s very hard to comprehend the logics and plans for new housing areas that have struggled for years without water, electricity and of course telephone services and to compound it with deplorable roads is like punishment not deserved. I have been following the protest at one of our locations that have roads that are always or mostly in a very deplorable state, I have frequently travelled that road in the past so I know firsthand of the conditions that pertains there.
Roads, we all must know are about development. Without proper roads then progress, commercial and otherwise would be retarded, communities in Guyana need to be the recipients of decent smooth access into and out of their places of abode and those businesses in these areas need to have egress and ingress without must hassle. It is about getting goods and services done without the burden of additional cost for transportation of supplies.
I live in a new housing area and there are two entrances in and out of the communities of Herstelling (East) and South of Herstelling. One entrance leads obliquely opposite the vulcanizing shop on Herstelling Public Road, and north of the Hindu Temple, and the overhead water tank and the other entrance is on the extreme northern side next to the Roger Khan scheme, both roads are in a bad state. I hastened to occupy my plot of land by constructing our house less than a year of possession of the land. This is due to the fact that the then Ministry of Housing stipulated a period to start construction. We live there as the only residence for three years, without water (which we now have) and electricity (none up to now) now to be saddled with deplorable roads is like pulverizing the residence of these two communities.
Let me be candid, and I am not being untruthful; before May 2015 the roads used to be graded regularly by the then contractors, but now residents are left to languish with vehicles being damaged daily, and added to this hardship those who do not own a vehicle and have to depend on taxi service are being made to walk through this slushy road since driver/owners do not want to risk their cars destroyed by the potholes in these roads.
I trust that those responsible would take note of my simple letter done in truthfulness and out concern for improvement for life in the communities mentioned above, and action would be expedited and there won’t have to be protest action to get attention, I humbly submit that conflict, confrontation and confusion can be averted if some attention can be given to fix this or these roads.
