Bush Lot Secondary marched into the quarter finals of the Digicel Schools Football Championship on account of a nerve racking 4-3 shootout from the penalty mark yesterday at the Campbell Town ground after regulation time failed to spate the two schools as it ended 0-0.
The colourful and vociferous home school supporters left the venue very disappointed due to the result as the Berbicians celebrated in style by chanting, “Who are the winners, Berbice; who did we beat, Mahdia.”
The hero for Bush Lot was their goalkeeper Trenton Dundas who turned in a sterling performance despite picking up an injury towards the backend of the match and during a period that the home team were all over their opponents.
Mahdia’s Captain and central defender Travis Caesar had a wonderful game during regulation time as he stood tall in defence but he ended up being the man to let his team down when it mattered as his kick from penalty mark, which would have tied the scores at 4 was tipped over the bar by Dundas to spark wild celebrations by the visiting team and officials.
Up to that point, both teams had missed once and had Caesar scored, it would have gone to sudden death penalty kicks but that was not to be.
Scoring for Bush Lot were Titus Webster, Eli Nurse, Kevin Felix and Shaqueel De Harte; Kevon Mars sent his schools fifth shot outside the right upright. For Mahdia, the players on target were Dominique Rodrigues, Troy Baker and Raynard James with their first three kicks whilst missing the fourth and fifth were Osafa Simpson (outside the right upright) and Captain Travis Caesar whose shot was tipped over the bar.
During regulation time, Bush Lot floored numerous opportunities from as early as the first minute. They were faster to the ball and got into Mahdia’s final third almost at will but, like as been the consistent problem, finishing was miserable.
Mahdia too, had their fair share of spoilt chances especially in the second half where they displayed a high level of energy. Two goal mouth scrimmages did not go their way as Bush Lot defended for all their worth to keep the home team and their energetic supporters at bay.
Dundas too was able to bring off some fine saves including one from point blank range off the boot of the nagging Elsworth John who tried his utmost but just could not trump the Bush Lot defence.
Bush Lot have now earned a quarter final date against Soesdyke, that match would be played on Sunday at a venue to be decided.
