A shipping container which was loaded onto the carrying tray of a truck operated by John Fernandes Limited was shifted off its balance yesterday and landed against a nearby fence.
The truck GMM 5842 was at the time heading north along La Penitence Public Road when the driver attempted to navigate a left turn into Independence Boulevard.
According to the driver of the truck, he approached the corner slowly and cautiously. It was then that he noticed the 45-foot container sliding off the tray and moments later tilting on the right side of the tray only to be propped up by the fence of B.L Beer Garden.
Only a few inches of the container remained on the tray preventing it from landing completely on the roadway.
The incident caused the flow of traffic along the Public Road on to Saffon Street to be backed up as police officers had to divert vehicles and other container trucks away from Independence Boulevard.
