The sight at Durban Park yesterday, aback of Square of the Revolution, was nothing short of spectacular as Guyanese in their thousands converged to show solidarity and experience the feel of new surroundings at the flag-raising ceremony, as Guyana celebrated its 46th Republic Anniversary.
A massive Golden Arrowhead, measuring 65 feet by 35 feet, was hoisted some 180 feet in the early evening air as spectators in the pavilions and beyond shifted barricades, waved their hands , some saluting, as they shouted in unison a deafening “blow breeze blow!” with an occasional “fly girl, fly!”
An amazing sight it was indeed as the evening progressed, where spectators, including the President, First Lady, Government officials and other dignitaries, were treated to clinical displays of marching by the Disciplined Forces and serenaded by the Guyana Police Force and Guyana Defence Force bands. Many in the stands, moved to the rhythmic beats of the drums as they waved flags and colours associated with national symbols.
