The inaugural V-Net T20 knockout cricket tournament is set to commence on November 1 in the Essequibo river island of Wakenaam. The tournament which is being sponsored by V-Net Communications was launched
on Friday at the entity’s location 25 Delph Street, Campbellville. V-Net Communications provides internet service including satellite, VoIP and satellite phones.
Good Success, Sans Souci, Sans Souci Jaguars, Noitgedacht SC, Maria’s Pleasure/Zeelandia and G Square Cavaliers of Belle Plaine are the teams that will battle for supremacy.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of V Net Communications Safraz Sheriffudeen said he is happy to contribute towards the development of the sport on the island. Sheriffudeen, himself a former member of the Sans Souci SC has over the years contributed towards sports and education in the area, having sponsored a number of cricket and dominoes competitions in recent years. He also used the occasion to present a number of prizes to the Essequibo Islands Secondary School which will be given to the outstanding CSEC students.
The CEO added that he is pleased to give back to the society from which he hailed and hopes that his input will influence others to support sports there and also motivate the players.
Chairman of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee (WCC) Moses Ramnarine expressed gratitude to Sheriffudeen for his continued support noting that Ricardo Adams and Keemo Paul are some of the players that have emerged from the island in recent times.
In the opening fixtures, G Square Cavaliers will host Maria’s Pleasure/Zeelandia at their spanking new venue in Belle Plaine at 09:30 hrs while Sans Souci Jaguars will play Noitgedacht SC at 09:30 hrs at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground in Good Success and Sans Souci will take on Good Success at the said venue at 13:30 hrs.
Trophies, medals and cash prizes will be given to the winning and runner up teams, while other prizes will be handed out to the tournament’s most valuable player, best batsman, bowler and man of the match in the final. There will also be a fair play award.
