Raj Singh U-19 Inter-County Cricket …
By Sean Devers
With the news that the Raj Singh Insurance 50-over Under-19 Inter-County 50-over
cricket match between the National U-17s and Berbice at Everest was washed out without a ball being bowled giving both teams a point each, Essequibo knew they were in a must win game at Enmore in the other match as they battled Demerara and the adverse weather.
Demerara rallied to 111-8 from 20 overs but Essequibo, set a revised target of 153 to win, were bowled out for 106 in 17 overs to lose by 48 runs on the DL system used in rain hit games.
Demerara won the toss and were off to a slow but solid start of 35-0 from 10 overs when rain chased the players off the field 10:27hrs in a game that even if defending Champions lost it would not have mattered since they had already qualified for tomorrow’s final at Everest before yesterday’s final preliminary round.
However, Essequibo, a point behind the National U-17s, had to win yesterday to advance the final and kept their fingers crossed for a restart even as the slight but persistent rain continued until mid afternoon when the skies remained dark grey but the rain stopped.
The contest resumed at 15:15hrs and Essequibo held the advantage since, not expecting a
reduction in the overs, last round centurion Tavin Imlach and Vivian Albert had opted to take the first 10 overs, in what should have been a 50-over contest, to play carefully and keep wickets and accelerate later in the innings.
The game resumed in overcast conditions on a wet outfield with the host required to face another 10 overs and Albert (15) was removed by left-arm spinner Keanu Harry at 49-1. Akeeni Adams, another left-arm spinner, then had Sherfane Rutherford, who hit him for a six over square-leg off the first ball he faced and stroked him through the legs of Travis Drakes at long-on for another one, taken by Drakes for an eight-ball 14 at 72-2.
And when Imlach (22) fell to Adams without addition to the score, no other batsman reached 15 as they lost eight wickets in six overs in their effort to score quickly. Harry took 4-33 and Adams 4-25 for Essequibo who lost their two openers with just six runs on the board.
Although Kemo Paul hammered a 32-ball 43 with five fours in a 48-run fifth wicket stand with left-hander Jonathon Fernandes, who thumped three fours and a six in 29 from 25 balls,
it was always going to be difficult for Essequibo to keep up the required run rate which had increased to over 10 per over especially since the ground was one of larger ones in Guyana and the outfield had become sodden from the downpour.
Man-of-the-match Rutherford held four catches and took 2-18 and got support from Malcolm Hubbard (2-32), Tariq Dharamlall (2-23) and Travis Persaud (2-0).
