National Club Champions, Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters clearly distinguished itself from Melanie
Patriots Wednesday night with a massive 103-70 win in the inaugural Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘King of the Hard Court’ competition.
Point guard, Travis Burnette and shooting guard Steffon Gillis menacingly scored 21 points each at Burnham Basketball Court while Jermaine Hamilton had 14 points with 12-point contributions from Michael Turner and Keith Tute respectively.
Froward Sherlon Legal continued his dominance in that position with a mammoth 30 points with Randy Mingo and Ashton Adams supporting with 13 and 11 points. Patriots had an excellent start to their campaign when they managed to edge the national champs 16-15 in the first quarter of the game. Legal and Adams eked out an early mechanism to combat Pacesetters with refreshing work in the paint and on the glass.
However, playing on their home court, Pacesetters’ Gillis fired his team into the lead with three daggers from ‘downtown’. Both teams battled in the closing minutes before halftime, but it was Pacesetters that went into halftime with a 34-31 lead.
Pacesetters’ Burnett, the MVP of the Guyana vs Bermuda Series, took over the third quarter, as he dropped 15 points to lead Pacesetters to a massive 64-45 points lead. Pacesetters outscored an initially competitive Patriots 30-14 in the penultimate period.
The National Champions then unleashed a savage offensive blitz to close out the game with the likes of
Hamilton, Tute and Sean Gillis amassing 39 points to bounce over the 100-point mark in the game.
In the opening Under-23 game, Colts romped to victory against Knights via walkover. The first competition for the new GABA Executive is slated to continue today at the same venue with a tripleheader.
Eagles play Patriots in an U-23 game at 6pm while Nets come up against University of Guyana from 8pm in the Division I competition. Eagles will play Plaisance Guardians from 10pm again in the Division I competition.
