It’s just four days away and already turfites are priming up for the action when the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) stages the Phagwah Race Meet at the Bushlot Farm Corentyne venue this Sunday.
The action was shifted from March 8 as the organizers worked assiduously to put the necessary modalities in place for a qualitative meeting. Those changes and modifications have since been effected and all systems are now in place for a day of qualitative horse racing.
Six races are carded for the day and the feature attraction will see horses in the A1 & Lower category battling for over one million dollars in cash, over a distance of 7 furlongs. The second place finisher will receive half of that amount with the 3rd and 4th places receiving $250,000 and $125,000 respectively.
Yesterday morning the management of the Berbice Bridge Company Inc (BBCI) donated the prize for this race and President of the KMTC, Justice Cecil Kennard, visited the Main Street office of the sponsors where Chief Executive Officer (BBCI) Omadat Samaroo, handed over the requisite cheque to offset those expenses.
He congratulated the organizers for their sterling efforts to keep the sport alive while noting that his organization has been a main contributor to these activities for a number of years.
“The BBCI not only plays the role of collecting tolls and facilitating vehicles at its crossing but also discharges its corporate duty and responsibilities to support national events and donating to charitable organizations,” said Mr. Samaroo.
He also disclosed that those receiving such considerations must also demonstrate a similar willingness to carry on the tradition of service to the communities. Mr. Kennard thanked his benefactor and assured him that the gift would serve to sustain the developmental efforts of his executives and organizers.
He also acknowledged the sustainability of the contribution noting that the BBCI has always been supportive. Meanwhile, turfites will be further entertained with the G1 and Lower event over a distance of 7 furlongs. The winning jockey carts off $300,000 while the second and third place finishers receive $150,000 and $75,000 respectively.
Then there is the K & Lower handicap event over 5 furlongs with the winning jockey winning $120.000 with half that amount going to the second place finisher. The third and 4th places will receive $30.000 and $15,000 respectively.
The other races are K1 and Lower over 5 furlongs, D3 Maiden and E & F Open over a similar distance and the J1 & Lower also over 5 furlongs. The final entries were accommodated since March 1 and all systems are in place for a day of excitement. Enquiries could be directed to Justice Kennard (623 7609) or Roopnarine Matadial (326 3192).
Meanwhile, the organizers have released the dates for race meets under their auspices for the remainder of the year. These include May 17, August 2, October 4 and December 26.
