The evidently distraught family members of four-year-old Jaden Mars were forced to say their final goodbyes Tuesday when he was laid to rest at Le Repentir Cemetery.
But according to mother of the dead lad, Natalie Caseley, the fight for “justice for Jaden” is not remotely over.
She and other family members are determined to get all their questions answered as it relates to Mars passing at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) last week Tuesday.
And according to Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, Michael Khan, answers about the circumstances that led to the child’s death will be forthcoming when officials of the hospital meet with Caseley tomorrow.
Although unable to comment on the findings yesterday, Khan said that all details of an investigation, which commenced even before the death of the child, will be disclosed to the grieving mother.
But an official close to the operation of the hospital said, “I don’t know if the family will accept the findings…the family will have to decide what is the next move.”
Mars was admitted a patient at the GPHC three Wednesdays ago after he accidentally fell and hit his chin on a five gallon bucket injuring his tongue in the process.
At the time he was at home with his maternal grandmother, Nancy Gittens, at the family’s 45 West Ruimveldt, Housing Scheme, Georgetown, residence.
He was initially rushed to the East La Penitence Health Centre where efforts were made to stop the bleeding and assess the extent of the injury before referring him to the GPHC for further care. The child was administered at least two 25 milligram doses of anaesthetic drug which was intended to sedate him ahead of having the tongue sutured.
The drug was however, not sufficient thereby forcing the attending doctor to refer him to theatre where the child’s condition deteriorated. He was hospitalised for close to one week before dying in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
A post mortem examination stated that Mars’ cause of death was Pulmonary Embolism.
According to Caseley, who is currently pregnant with her third child, although she is trying to be strong, despite the loss of her son, she is increasingly finding it hard to come to terms with the fact that she will longer be seeing him. “He was truly a gem.” Yesterday she disclosed that the child’s father, Junior Mars, has been in a depressed state since learning of his death.
While it is the belief of the child’s family that negligence played a major role in his demise, Caseley is hopeful that the unfortunate situation will pave the way for the offering of improved health care at the premier public hospital, as well as health institutions across the country.
