A 40-year-old father of one was shot and robbed in broad daylight yesterday and is currently a patient at the Best Public Hospital in Vreed-en-hoop.
The injured man is Keith Whyte of 25 Best Village, West Coast Demerara. Whyte owns and operates a cell phone stall in Stabroek Market and also has business operations in the interior. The businessman disclosed that he was walking down Best Road in Vreed-en-hoop, with money and jewellery in his briefcase, estimated at just over two million dollars.
“I was heading to work around 9 o’clock, and I also had to go to a goldsmith within the vicinity to repair some of my jewellery.”
The man said that before he realized it, he was ambushed by two
bandits on a Honda CG motorcycle.
“As soon as I came out of the street, two guys rode up from behind me… All I heard was pow! I felt a burning sensation. The bullet struck at the back of my leg and put me on the ground. The pillion rider… he was the one that shot me. He said pass the F….ing bag, then he just put the bag on his shoulder, and went with the other one on the bike and that was it… very fast,” Whyte recounted.
He said the robbers then made off with their booty. Whyte was taken to the hospital by a taxi driver he knew.
Whyte, who was in visible discomfort when Kaieteur News spoke with him in hospital, said the bullet had entered at the back of his leg and had exited.
The businessman believes that the robbers had carefully calculated their attack on him.
“I went into business a little while now; you never know if people might be looking at you, watching your moves everyday and just waiting for the perfect opportunity to grab it. They got through this morning. This was the first time that I was robbed.”
The matter was reported to the police who were at the hospital to uplift a statement from Whyte. Investigations are ongoing. His condition is currently listed as stable, but he had to be admitted to the ward for observation since he lost a lot of blood.
