Police have detained the son of the woman who allegedly abducted Mon Repos resident, Khamattie Mangal, two Fridays ago. But they have been unable to locate the alleged mastermind.
A police official told Kaieteur News that investigators have made several checks at the woman’s home and found the building “locked up tight.”
“We have not been able to arrest the woman, but her son has been arrested,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur News understands that ranks from the force’s forensic division are examining a length of duct tape for fingerprints to ascertain whether they match those of the alleged perpetrators.
Mangal had handed the duct tape over to the police at Sparendaam on Thursday after giving investigators a statement. She also underwent a medical examination for facial injuries she allegedly sustained at the hands of the woman at the centre of the abduction.
Police say that their investigation was hampered by the fact that Mangal had failed to return to the Sparendaam Police Station the day after the incident as she had been instructed to.
The alleged victim and relatives contacted officials at the US Embassy on Monday after saying they had little confidence that local law enforcement officials could protect her. She also spoke to officials at the Ministry of Human Services.
A member of the abductor’s family is serving a lengthy sentence in the US.
Mangal, of Block Eight, Mon Repos, has claimed that she was gagged, duct-taped and locked in a storage bond by the alleged perpetrator and two of her children.
The woman, who had worked with the family as a maid, said she managed to escape after cutting through her bonds and breaking out of the storage facility.
She claimed that her employer had accused her of using her necklace and other valuables.
Mangal, who had worked as a domestic with the East Coast Demerara family for about three years, said that her troubles started at around 13:45 hrs last week Friday, when she indicated that she was ready to leave for the day and asked for her weekly wages.
She claimed that her employer responded by accusing her of making merry with her things. Despite denying the allegation, Mangal’s employee reportedly forced her to sit and duct-taped the maid’s hands behind her back.
It is alleged that the woman also punched Mangal in the face before calling on her two teenaged children to help cover the maid’s mouth with duct-tape.
Mangal alleged that after being relieved of her mobile phone, the trio placed two bags over her head and took her by vehicle to a storage bond. She said that her captors forced her to sit with her back to a concrete post and secured her to the post with more duct-tape. She was then locked inside the storage facility.
Mangal said that after her captors left, she managed to remove the bags on her head, and eventually managed to free herself and escape from the bond, which she said is located a short distance from her abductors’ home.
The woman said that a minibus driver dropped her off at the Sparendaam Police Station.
According to Mangal, a policeman took her report and the ranks even looked at a portion of the duct tape that she still had. However, the ranks did not keep it.
The woman said that the police ranks told her to get a medical report from the Georgetown Public Hospital.
But Mangal said that she did not return to the station the following day because she had no confidence in the police. Instead, she went to the Ministry of Human Services on Monday and subsequently spoke to an official at the US Embassy.
Mangal said that she is so fearful for her life and that of her children that she moved out of her home the same day and has not returned. She has also altered her appearance.
