Jan 26, 2011 Letters
Dear Editor,
The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) takes this opportunity to respond to the letter written by S. Samaroo in the Friday, January 21, 2011 edition of the Kaieteur newspaper captioned “The GNBS has taken Importers for granted”. The GNBS views seriously the matters highlighted by the writer in his/her letter.
The organisation is very concerned about the sweeping allegations made against its staff and notes that they can tarnish the good image the GNBS has been working to maintain.
Over the years, the Bureau has been working assiduously with its stakeholders to effectively and reliably execute its mandate which includes the monitoring of twenty categories of commodities under the National Standards Compliance programme. It has also spearheaded the National Weights and Measures programme, Technical Assistance to companies and businesses desirous of implementing standards and provides relevant information to consumers to ensure that there are educated and well informed.
Under the Standards Compliance programme, payments are only required annually from Importers ($30,000), Local Manufacturers ($25,000) and Dealers ($20,000) during registration to facilitate the importation and sale of commodities falling under the purview of the GNBS. Any other unauthorized receipt or payment of monies under the said programme would be deemed unlawful.
In light of the above, the GNBS is eager to address these concerns and would be grateful if the writer could substantiate his/her claims of alleged improprieties done by Inspectors in collusion with Importers and Dealers by producing credible evidence to the Management of the Organisation.
Meanwhile, follow ups would be conducted to ensure that commodities highlighted are in compliance with their requisite quality and storage requirements, as set out in the relevant standards.
The GNBS would continue it sterling efforts to monitor the quality of goods falling under its purview in order to ensure consumers receive value for their money by ensuring the availability of quality products in the market place and prevent Guyana from becoming the dumping ground for sub-standards and defective products.
