A little more than a month after a fire destroyed the dwelling places and small businesses of close to two dozen families, works are in progress for a new housing scheme.
However, as the clearing phase is ongoing, residents and business persons are more interested in the rebuilding of the arcade. Region Eight Chairman, Senor Bell in an interview with this newspaper said he could not give a definitive word as to when actual work on the arcade will commence, but noted that the Government has allocated some $20M towards the rebuilding.
He noted, too, that the victims who were displaced have since moved into other mining communities, while some have relocated with family to other parts of Mahdia and some have gone back to the city.
In relation to the work on-site at the land that has been allocated for the housing scheme, Bell said that machines are currently clearing the land. According to the Regional Chairman, personnel from the Ministry of Housing are expected to meet with the community on Monday (August 9) to further discuss the way forward. He explained that from what he was told, the fire victims will be given priority, while those persons who made application in the past will be next in line. He further explained that despite the fire there has been no major setback in the community given the fact that the area mainly depends on mining.
Meanwhile, some residents who spoke with this newspaper have indicated that they are awaiting an official word from the relevant authority about the housing scheme project.
They said that this is not the first attempt by the Government to start a housing scheme project. Some say they are hopeful that the initiative will be materialised since it is a much needed venture. In the meantime, the community and their leader have been engaged in discussion about measures that can be put in place in the event of another fire.
According to the Regional Executive Officer, Ishwar Dass, plans are afoot for the sourcing of a vehicle, fitted with a tank and a water pump. In addition, Dass said that the region will be implementing stricter measures for persons desirous of setting up establishments in the community. He explained that they will be asked to make sure that their property is in keeping with all occupational Safety and Health regulations.
“When persons come to us with their plans we have to see at least two fire points as well as upon our inspection, we must see two working fire extinguishers.”
On July 1, fire destroyed more than 20 structures in Mahdia’s commercial district, leaving millions of dollars in losses. (Jenelle Carter)
