Some workers from the Guyana National Industrial Corporation Inc, are seeking the intervention of the Ministry of Labour over wages owed to them for hours of work which they have completed.
Apart from the wages issue the workers are claiming that they are being paid monies far below the minimum wages stipulated by the Government.
According to the letter, which was penned to the Chief Labour Officer earlier this week, junior security guards are being paid $27,534 per month. In addition the workers are claiming that sometimes they are forced to work from seven to eleven days before being given a day off.
The workers are also claiming that time off is officially granted by the company to employees of all other department during working hours except to the security department.
This newspaper was told that these issues were raised with the Company’s Human Resources Manager, Alan Johnson, and Mr. Carvil Duncan, who is one of the company’s director and the also the General Secretary of the Guyana Labour Union which represents several workers of the company.
When contacted, Mr. Carvil Duncan said that he is aware of the letter but the contents are far from the truth. Duncan said he has received a copy of the letter but there are neither names nor signatures on the letter. He added that the Ministry of Labour has indicated that there is nothing it can do since the letter has no signatures as well.
Duncan added that the letter is the work of one man who is trying to create mischief since he had his services terminated from the company for absenteeism.
“If the letter was genuine it would have had names, the workers who are being affected would have all come forward to have the issue rectified,” Duncan lamented.
