Dear Editor,
We are all saddened when we see and hear of the devastation of Haiti. At the same time, I am heartened at the ready responses to cries for help from various segments of society here and beyond. The Government has responded promptly with a magnanimous offer and this is very encouraging…let us all continue to contribute in whatever way possible.
As I reflect on the positive side of things some of the words of Mordecai in Esther 4: 13-14 (Holy Bible) echoed in my ear. “Do not think in your heart that you will escape…if you remain completely silent…”These words were spoken to Esther as the lives of her people were threatened.
And I feel constrained to remind all Guyana that God has been speaking to us in various ways, reminding us that righteousness exalts a nation. How can we forget the floods of 2005? But these pale into insignificance in comparison to Haiti’s tragedy…and I am reminded that Voodooism, a religion that does not acknowledge the One, True and Living God is widely embraced in that country. I read in Psalm 144:15 “…happy are the people whose God is the Lord!” and the words of this song run through my mind. “Take ‘warnin’, yuh betta take warnin’”
