Upstarts Riddim Squad continue to ride the rhythm of victory in the city with the latest episode of their fairytale run, 1-0 triumph over Pele to book a place in the quarter-final and a date with Sunburst Camptown in the feature game tonight at the Tucville ground.
Also sailing in to the quarter-final on Monday night were East Demerara’s Victoria Kings who hammered West Demerara’s Seawall FC 4-0 while Georgetown Football Club through a Peter Parks 11th minute penalty got past Bakewell Buxton United.
But the major upset of the tournament to date was the replayed game between Pele and Riddim Squad. The first encounter last week was abandoned in the second half with the scores tied at 1-1 and this was due to crowd trouble.
This time around, Riddim Squad, Western Union division one champions in the city, proved why they were unbeaten throughout the league and still is.
The Mocha based side, a physically strong and potent unit never allowed Pele to dictate the flow of the game as they matched them in every department.
The match up though, was by no means an easy battle for either team as it brought out the best in both teams. But it was the rhythm of Riddim Squad that eventually sunk Pele.
Nagging forward Sheldon Hope in the 63rd minute made good on his chance, banging the ball past goalkeeper Shemroy Arthur after collecting a well timed cross from Gordon Grant in the box. Hope, in clinical fashion rocked the nets and there was no turning back from that point.
GFC closed the deal against Bakewell Buxton Stars as early as the 11th minute when ‘Golden Jaguar’ Peter Parks just back from playing in Guyana’s Historic win of the Suriname Independence Cup, put the ball away from the penalty spot.
Victoria Kings sailed to an impressive win and the final eight with a sound trashing of Seawall FC, compliments of a hat-trick from Pierre Joseph, Dwayne Stephens netting the other. All the goals were scored in the second half.
Fans can look forward to some exhilarating quarter-final clashes beginning this evening at the same venue in the event organised by the Fruta Conquerors Football Club and sponsored by the National Milling Company of Guyana, NAMILCO.
New Amsterdam United who downed the host team 2-1 in their group-of-16 match will lock horns against Victoria Kings in the first quarter-final encounter from 18:00hrs this evening.
Both sides have looked solid but only one will have the delight of advancing to the semi-final after tonight’s showdown.
The main event has the potential to be a scorching battle when Sunburst Camptown throw down the gauntlet to upstarts Riddim Squad. Camptown made light work of Uprising in their opening salvo while Riddim Squad will still be riding on their massive win against Pele. Again, only one of these two teams will advance.
The Hope brothers again will be called upon to lead Riddim Squad while the likes of Nigel Codrington, Telson McKinnon, Troy Prescod, Reshawn Sandiford, Lance Rolston and Orlando Gilgeous will be at the helm for Camptown.
Sponsors NAMILCO will continue their giveaways to luck fans. Hampers made up of the company’s products have been given away on each night of the tournament to date and tonight will be no different. Two more luck fans will win such hampers. Fans can also look out for Pholourie Mix giveaways.
BE THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL TO THE FOREIGN EXPLOITERS
