– final All-Star teams likely today
By Edison Jefford
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) has included Rodwell Fortune and Darren Thomas into their 13-man Senior All-Star squad with the final selection of the team likely today following a scheduled practice session.
Secretary of the GABA, Robert Cadogan, who is also one of the Georgetown Coaches for both the Junior and Senior All-Star teams, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that some names had to be adjusted following Monday night’s meeting.
“We had to make some adjustments after witnessing at our practice meeting Monday that many people did not turn up for practice. This is serious business and we will not tolerate indiscipline,” Cadogan said from his home yesterday.
Thomas and Fortune were surprisingly left out of the initial squad despite their reputation in their respective positions. The addition of the duo should certainly boost a Georgetown outfit that seems understaffed compared to Linden.
Cadogan indicated that Thomas “brings a big presence on the inside and is definitely one of the towers of strength”. He admitted to Thomas being a selection oversight earlier, but informed that Fortune had a threatening knee injury.
“Fortune had a dreadful knee injury, but from all reports he has been training and I guess the injury has healed somewhat. Once we have a fit Fortune, we all know what will be a likely outcome,” the National Basketball Coach said.
Thomas is literally a beast in the paint while Fortune is one of the most rounded guards in Guyana; Fortune shoots, takes rebounds, steals and runs the entire court. His talent is rare and he definitely has the necessary All-Star quality.
While Georgetown seems to be enveloped in a bit of uncertainty as it relates to naming its Senior and Junior All-Star teams, Linden practice sessions are ongoing because they had identified their respective All-Stars from the first instance.
Cadogan told this newspaper that both Georgetown teams will be selected following both practice sessions on Burnham Basketball Court this afternoon. The teams were expected to be named after a practice meeting Monday night.
Asked if the uncertainty puts them at a further disadvantage after their defeat last year, he said that the only uncertainty was when all the players did not turn up to practice Monday but other than that, Georgetown is certainly confident.
“We’ll make our final selection today. Their (Linden) only psychological advantage came when they won last year, but we are going to reverse that result this year. We’ve made all the necessary adjustments,” Cadogan indicated.
The Senior All-Star game will go down Sunday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in a gala event as part of the Beepat Scorpions’ All-Star Weekend. The Junior All-Star clash will occur Saturday night at the same indoor venue.
