Dear Editor,
The recent incidents of murder and robbery in the Essequibo River by the Guyana Defence Force (Coast Guard) elements and the subsequent theft by members of the Police Force of some of the loot grabbed by the Coast Guard are only the latest in a long list of disturbing evidence of a systemic breakdown in discipline, the absence of a sense of mission and purpose, and the woeful lack of basic humanity exhibited by various arms of the Security Forces when dealing with the public.
WPA rejects the view which attributes all these degenerations to the presence of “rogue elements” in the Security Services. This could very well end up as an unsavoury pretext for sweeping very dangerous developments in the country under the proverbial “rug”.
Propriety, decency and self-respect demand that the heads of these two branches of the Security Forces tender their resignation to the President forthwith to show that “the buck stops there”.
Whether or not the President accepts them, he should then call a Commission to enquire into these disturbing developments in the country’s Security Services.
