Irish Gel ridden by champion jockey Kumar Singh produced an authoritative display to capture the C & Lower feature event at last Sunday’s Jumbo Jet Auto Sales Guyana Cup Horseracing Meeting which was held at the Rising Sun Turf Club on the West Coast Berbice.
Singh, who had already won three races before was at his magical best as he rode a strong race to hold off a fast closing Miss Republic with Paul Delph aboard, while Jumbo Boy ridden by Yap Drepaul finished third with Laura Lee in Flight ending fourth.
The victory was worth $1million, while 2nd place earned $500,000, 3rd place $250,000 and 4th place $125,000.
The 1400 metres race started with pre-race favourite Sequins and Irish Gel making the running followed by Miss Republic in that order. As they approached the back straights, Irish Gel and Sequins continued their duel with Miss Republic just behind and Jumbo Joy tracking the leaders.
In the turn for home, Irish Gel picked up the running from Miss Republic, but by this time Sequins was a beaten horse as favourite Jumbo Joy came into the picture with a storming run on the inside.
Singh, however, with a strong hand ride took Irish Gel across the line by a length much to the excitement of his fans and the horse’s connections.
Earlier, Singh showed his class when he rode rank outsider Matterazi to victory in the G & Lower Class to add to wins on board Sweet Romance in the co-feature and Bad News to cart off the champion jockey award and a motor cycle.
In the day’s full results: Race 1 (E & Lower)- 1st The Message, 2nd Pinch-de-Cash, 3rd Gap and 4th Face-d-Music; Race 2 (I & Lower)- 1st Bad News, 2nd Pixie Fier, 3rd Kavinci and 4th New World; Race 3 (L & Lower)- 1st Natural Black, 2nd President (JR), 3rd Gold Finer; Race 4 (2 year old Open) – 1st Jen’s Pride, 2nd Zenyatta, 3rd Little Spike; Race 5 (3 year old Open born and bred in the West Indies) – 1st Sweet Romance, 2nd Night Cresendo, 3rd Top of the Line and 4th Zippa-de-doo-Dah; Race 6 (G & Lower) – 1st Matterazi, 2nd Alphabet, 3rd Face-d-Music and 4th Hatrick; Race 7 (C & Lower) – 1st Irish Gel, 2nd Miss Republic, 3rd Jumbo Joy and 4th Laura Lee in Flight and Race 8 (J, K & Lower) – 1st Custom Warrior.
