…stage another picketing
In its continued effort to emphasise concerns of national interest, members of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) staged another picketing exercise, yesterday. They converged, though in meagre numbers, on Vlissengen Road outside Office of the President and chanted slogans that were in no way flattering to the government of the day.
According to one of the protesters, yesterday simply represented another day of vigorous protest action by the party in its quest to highlight unacceptable situations that have not been addressed by the ruling administration.
One party member related to this newspaper that “we will not stop, we will not let up until this government understands that the people of Guyana would no longer take things for granted. We are not going to accept a Government that is being accused of being involved in a criminal enterprise.”
The placard-bearing picketers emphasised that a direct link has been established between the government and “the major Drug Lord of the country.” It was highlighted too that although the names of Ministers are being called in connection with criminal undertakings, President Bharrat Jagdeo has refused to act.
“We in the PNCR have decided that it is only the people in Guyana that can come out and raise the issue. We are surprised and disappointed that the president has not budged. In fact, they are saying that it is a minor issue.”
Following disclosures in a New York courtroom during the Robert Simels trial, names including that of holders of public offices were called, raising some level of suspicion of the government’s involvement with self-confessed drug dealer, Shaheed Roger Khan.
Leader of the main opposition Party, Robert Corbin, had brought the motion for the issue to be discussed as an urgent public matter at a recent sitting of Parliament.
However, that motion was denied prompting the PNCR to take action in the form of picketing exercises.
“We will not let up until they realise that the lives of Guyanese are important and this matter is very urgent…” said a picketer.
And according to the picketers, the grass verge outside Office of the President was strategically selected yesterday as it was from the President that relevant action is expected to be taken to address their concerns.
However, other areas will not be ruled out as the venue for similar exercise, as the picketers have made it clear that they will venture wherever it seems appropriate to get across their point.
