Dear Editor,
The time has come for all Guyanese to recognise the efforts of the government for ‘stepping in’ as it were to make stern decisions about the future of the sugar industry and the fate of sugar.
I must commend the government, in particular President Jagdeo and the Agriculture Minister, for making firm and decisive decisions to streamline management of the GuySuCo Board and various estates. I believe that the new dispensation of the interim board and other management changes will witness progress. For too long we have been accepting excuses from some top management as to the poor performance of the corporation.
It is evident that the new interim board was carefully composed and I strongly believe that this new bunch of people will do justice to the position and powers granted upon them due mainly to their credibility and professionalism in their various fields.
At this point in time, I would like to urge all Guyanese to lend their support to this new group of people and the government by making constructive and meaningful contributions to move the sector forward.
The sugar industry belongs to all of Guyana and all of us must make a concerted effort in whatever way to ensure its viability, as if it fails, all of Guyana will be looked upon. So let’s put our shoulders to the wheel and support the new management changes in the sugar industry as we confront the likely challenges ahead. “All are involved, all are consumed”
Vivian Li
