To focus on youth development in first six months
By Franklin Wilson
Treasurer of the Guyana Cricket Board Sheik Asif Ahmad has been elected President of the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) following a landslide win over former President Alvin Johnson when the Biennial General Meeting of the ECB which was held at the Parika Marketing Centre yesterday.
Returning to office were Vice President Faizul Bacchus, Secretary Linden Daniels and Public Relations Officer, Carl Brandon.
The new Treasurer is Otto Christiani, Mervin Pearson will serve as Assistant Secretary while the Assistant Treasurer is Sheik Faizal. Chris Holder was elected Marketing Manager.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport a few hours after being elected, Ahmad disclosed that the focus of his executive for the next six months would be youth development.
“We have decided that it is critical for us to build a firm foundation in moving forward and we will seek to strengthen our players at the under 12, 15, 17 and 19 levels. It is also our intention to work at the Primary school level.”
Ahmad pointed out that the Neighborhood Democratic Councils also have a major role to play as a stakeholder.
“We would be approaching them to assist in the preparation and maintenance of facilities.”
Whipping the eight (8) Area Committees into a state of being proactive is also one of the President’s focal areas.
“While we recognise that youth development is vital for us becoming more competitive, we will also be working on improving the skills of the coaches and umpires as well as the Marketing of Essequibo cricket.”
Ahmad believes that the playing of Inter County Cricket must return to the Cinderella County since it will serve to motivate the players and bring back the fans.
“We have been travelling to other parts of Guyana for the past few years and I believe that games must return to Essequibo in the near future especially at the youth level.”
The aim of the new board is to restore pride to Essequibo cricket.
