Venezuelan nationals, Alejandro Butto, 34; Adelso Antonio Romero Archila; and Jesus Gomez, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to face charges of illegal entry into Guyana. They are accused of failing to present themselves to immigration authorities.
The men reportedly entered Guyana on Boxing Day. They pleaded guilty and asked to explain their position. Present in court was an interpreter.
When asked by Magistrate Robertson why they failed to present themselves to the Immigration Authority, Butto said that when they arrived in Guyana, they didn’t know anyone and were hesitant to show themselves to the Immigration Officers.
The prosecution stated that the defendants were aware of the consequences of such an offence and that they should pay the price.
They added that they have ‘no objection to bail’.
Magistrate Robertson fined the defendants $30,000 each for the offence and ordered their deportation.
