Divisional Commander of the Police B division, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam on Tuesday presented a cheque of a substantial amount to young and upcoming cyclist Zaman Khan and Cycle Coach Randolph.
Khan, 15 who hails from the Corentyne, Berbice is the national Juvenile cycling champion. The Flying Ace Cycle Club member has been selected by the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) as part of the team that is expected to represent Guyana at the 2016 edition of the Caribbean Junior cycling Championships which will be hosted in St. Lucia, July 30-31.
Roberts who is the founder and coach of the FACC will accompany the team as the coach. The donation was given to the duo to help them offset their travelling, accommodation and other expenses whilst overseas. The presentation was made in the Commander’s office, Strand and Cobourg Street, New Amsterdam.
Amsterdam took the opportunity to congratulate Khan for his successes so far and his selection on a national team to represent Guyana. He stated that he was pleased with the progress being made by young Khan and readily decided to assist when approached. He said that the gesture is all part of the police force’s effort in assisting youths in sport and education which eventually would lead to them becoming better individuals.
He urged Khan to keep the good work up and be a role model since he is now an ambassador of his country.
The Commander said that with the many social ills and illicit activities being perpetrated by youths, it is commendable what Khan is doing.
Khan for his part thanks God for guidance and strength. He also had words of thanks and appreciation to Commander Amsterdam for his kind words of advice and assistance so far. He also had words of thanks for his parents and Coach Randolph Roberts.
Others contributing assisting the duo include A. Ally and Sons, Water Christ Hotel, Lewis and Sons General Store Rose hall Town, Steve Macedo, Mara and Sons and GBTI Corriverton Branch among others.
Also making the trip is Christopher Cornelius of Team Evolution, the United Cycle Club duo of Andrew Hicks and Raphael Leung along with Linden Bauxite Flyers Club’s, Jornel Yearwood.
Marc Sonoram will accompany the team as Manager.
The 10 kilometer Time Trials for boys (15-16) juveniles and the 20 kilometer for junior men will all be held on Saturday July 30 in the afternoon on the Millennium Highway, while the Road Race will be contested on Sunday July 31st, juveniles will cover a distance of 62.2 kilometers with the juniors expected to battle for 100 kilometers; the riders are also expected to contest the Time Trials.
