A 29-year-old dental technician charged with the stabbing his 23-year-old girlfriend to death on Sunday was remanded
to prison when he appeared in court yesterday.
Sudesh Lakeram, also known as Amit, appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Ann McLennan to face a murder charge.
Lakeram is charged with murdering his 23-year-old girlfriend, Rajkumarie Persaud, called “Ashtie” at their Hague, West Coast Demerara home on Sunday (September 21). He was not required to respond to the indictable charge. The accused is being represented by Defence Attorney, Hukumchand Parag.
After the short hearing, Lakeram was remanded and is to appear in court again on October 15.
According to previous reports, Lakeram, a Dental Technician, turned himself over to the police after he allegedly attacked and killed the woman.
It was reported that one of Persaud’s aunts heard screams and upon investigating, she saw her niece lying in a pool of blood. The 23-year-old was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she died before receiving medical attention.
Lakeram reportedly managed to flee to his employer’s house in Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara. He was, however, taken to the Providence Police Station by his employer.
The couple had started dating just under a year ago, after both suspect and victim had separated from their spouses. They were reportedly “having problems” and had separated but last Saturday the man returned to the woman’s Hague home to beg for a second chance.
The couple reportedly had a misunderstanding that day, which led to the suspect stabbing the woman several times about her body in their one bedroom apartment.
A post mortem performed on the body revealed that the mother of one died from hemorrhage due to incised wounds.
