The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) now has an official presence on the Upper Corentyne after the recent commissioning of its refurbished building at Corriverton.
On Friday July 25, the refurbished building at Corriverton, Corentyne, was officially opened by Chief Elections Officer (C.E.O) – Keith Lowenfield in the presence of People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Member of Parliament – Faizal Jaffarally.
Mr. Lowenfield was assisted by Member of Parliament (MP) Faizal M. Jaffarally in cutting the ribbon to the new building. Also present at the opening were GECOM staff members from the New Amsterdam, Kildonan, Fort Wellington, Mahaicony; North Georgetown, South Georgetown and East Bank Demerara Registration Offices.
Over the past decade, the GECOM staffers at Corriverton faced numerous constraints in the building which was once occupied by the Immigration Department at Springlands. With the acquisition of the new building, they will now be able to carry out their duties in a more efficient manner.
Staff members at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) office on the Upper Corentyne, now have access to a conducive working environment in which they can offer quality service to residents in the Number 52 Village – Corentyne River district.
“We want to ensure that we have a permanent presence to serve every community,” Lowenfield said, while delivering remarks.
“We strived and achieved a building, but it is important that our staff understand the value of this acquisition and serve the public efficiently. We provide a critical service to the democratic process of elections,” he added.
The Registration Officer in charge of the Corriverton office, Delon Clarke, said that the Corriverton staff worked under challenging conditions in the past and that the new office will bring much ease to the employees.
“I remember that we came to Corriverton at the old Neighbourhood Democratic Council office, and we had eight members of staff. It was always our dream to have our own office and today, that dream has been realized,” he added.
“We had faith and belief that one day, we will get our own office and we are grateful to Mr. Zulfikar Mustapha (former Region Six Chairman) for assisting us with this acquisition.”
Jaffarally noted that the government is desirous of allocating buildings for every GECOM office in the country in the coming years.
“As a government, we believe that people should be comfortable and the environment conducive for proper delivery of service,” he added.
“We hope that you will be able to provide a very courteous, effective and reliable service to Region Six.”
