The excitingly anticipated annual Demerara Mutual Life sponsored Golf Tournament at the LGC Saturday last lived up to its expectations, with Club President David Mohamad setting a personal record as he won in his category – the 19 – 28 handicappers.
Teeing off at about 12:45 p.m. three of last year’s winners – Haniff, Solomon and Walker were present to defend their titles. But as skill of play would have it, and operating on the Flight play system, new winners emerged.
President David Mohamad’s net score, which would have won him the Best Player score on the previous open system, gave him instead a record for the 19 – 28 handicapper Flight. One wonders if the LGC executive is bent on setting records for the Club this season! Last week’s BK Inc Tournament win of net 60 by Ground Supervisor Mike Guyadin, handicap 15, was a record for the open medal play system. Such enterprising achievements by golfers can only cause greater skill and performance levels for the benefit of the Club.
Now using the system of Flights for competitions, the LGC expects much keener competition and records to be set in each Flight.
1st and 2nd place winners of the different Flights were: First Flight – handicaps 0 – 9; Mohanlall Dinanauth, handicap 4, net 69, and William Walker, handicap 7, net 70. Second Flight – handicaps 10 – 18; Bolaram Deo handicap 17, net 66, and Colin Ming, handicap 13, net 68.
Third Flight – handicaps 20 – 28; David Mohamad, handicap 23, net 62, and Troy Cadogan handicap 24, net 71. Joaan Deo, handicap 15, net 68, won the Ladies 1st prize. Bolaram Deo won Nearest to the Pin also.
Dem Life Branch Manager Mr Charles Clarke was on hand from start to finish of the day’s play. New to golf, but a player and lover of cricket, in his congratulatory remarks to the winners he added, “Dem Life is honoured to be associated with the Lusignan Golf Club, and on behalf of the Company I can assure you of our continued support. In fact, I am considering becoming a member of the Golf Club myself!”
A beaming Club President Mohamad expressed appreciation to Dem Life on behalf of the LGC and took the opportunity to express appreciation for the state of the grounds as well as to encourage golfers to continue good golfing.
