A team of policemen was last evening trying to track down a gang of gunmen who stormed a mining camp at 14 Miles, Issano, shooting the general manager and reportedly making off with a quantity of raw gold.
The victim, identified as Vernon Mc Kenzie of Second Avenue, Bartica, was reportedly shot in the chest and he is said to be in a critical condition.
At press time, efforts were being made to transport him to the city by plane.
According to reports, Mc Kenzie and two workers were in the camp around 17:30 hrs, when the robbers entered the camp and opened fire.
The two workers managed to flee unharmed.
Kaieteur News understands that when one of the workers returned, he found Mc Kenzie lying on the ground with a bullet wound to the chest.
He also discovered that the robbers had made off with the entire production of raw gold.
The worker managed to contact the dredge camp owner by radio, and the wounded man was transported out of the area.
