Farmers on the east bank of the of the Pomeroon River in Region Two are currently counting their losses as a result of the flooding, and are calling on the Ministry of Agriculture to come to their aid.
The December/January rainy season is currently inundating farmlands throughout the country with Regions Two, Four and Five so far faring the worst.
Above average rains have been predicted over prolonged periods.
Father’s Beach in Region Two also reported a dam failure on Sunday last, causing water from the Atlantic Ocean to flood the community and its farmlands.
According to the farmers in the region, the lack of efficient drainage and irrigation is largely to be blamed for the high levels of water in their farmlands
Orlando Norton, village councillor of Father’s Beach, told this newspaper that in the interim the community was seeking to convince funding agencies to assist in the reconstruction of the dam protecting the community.
Nicholas Gonsalves, also of Pomeroon, told this newspaper that he has lost his entire farmland to the flooding.
He reported also that several of his fellow farmers were faced with the same scenario.
This newspaper has learnt that on the west bank of the river the farmlands were all empoldered and so did not share the same fate.
Agriculture Ministry officials confirm that empoldering the farmlands on the east bank of the river is currently a priority.
The Agriculture Ministry has reported that an emergency meeting of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority’s (NDIA) Board was convened yesterday by Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud to review the ongoing drainage response to the current intense rainfall.
It was pointed out that Minister Persaud noted that efforts are ongoing to ensure that water accumulating on the land is drained in a timely manner, since the high level of rain being recorded is well above that which the current drainage system can accommodate.
The Minister urged RDCs and NDCs to be more vigilant and proactive as they are responsible for the drainage system.
