Having earned a crucial draw against League B Group C winner, Jamaica in Reggae land, Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ which made its debut at the 15th edition of the Concacaf Gold Cup in the USA last year, will be aiming for back to back qualification and be present for the 16th edition in 2021.
Guyana was not able to qualify directly as it ended as the runner-up team in the 2019-2020 Concacaf Nations League which effectively kicked off the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup qualification process.
When group play ended last November, Guyana took the second place in the group with 10 points from their six matches, Jamaica topped with 16 from six, Antigua and Barbuda 9 and Aruba 0.
Following group stage play, the top two finishers in each of the League A groups along with the top finisher in each of the League B groups secured their participation to the 16th edition of the Confederation’s premier tournament for men’s national teams.
Already punching their tickets to the Concacaf Gold Cup are Canada, Costa Rica, Curacao, El Salvador, Grenada, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Suriname and the United States.
Guyana’s SMNT Head Coach Márcio Máximo will be concentrating all his energies along with his Technical team to ensure the ‘Golden Jaguars’ qualify for next year’s prestigious tournament for the second successive time.
That journey will continue with a two-round qualifier, to be played in a direct elimination format commencing in March against Barbados which topped League C Group A on goal difference ahead of Cayman Islands, both ending on 12 points from their six matches.
The dates and venues are yet to be announced by Concacaf for the home and away matches, the winner following 180 minutes of play will then move on to face Trinidad and Tobago in the FIFA window in June.
The Twin Island Republic ended last in League A Group C with just two points from four matches, the group was won by Honduras ahead of Martinique.
Again, following home-and-away rivalry, the winner will qualify for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. (Franklin Wilson)
