Virulent foliar disease is reported to infect 80% of a papaya farm with 200 productive plants. The disease, which is said to be spreading at a rapid rate, is uncontrolled as farmer alluded to his
intervention with previously used copper based fungicide.
There are signs of burnt leaves, in addition to leaf curl, margin burns with scattered yellow spots on leaves and newly emerged fruits are reported deformed.
Kapieldeo Rampersaud, of Parika Back dam, a farmer of over 30 years, believes that should the problem persist he is likely to lose significant earnings as the crop is a major source of gross income in a diversified farming system.
According to the farmer, the current farm-gate price for papaya is $3,000 per dozen relative to size as a function of quality with potential estimated loss of some $2.5M if control is not adequately accomplished.
The papaya Red Lady 786 variety is resistant to the dreaded Papaya Ring Spot Virus produces minimum of 50 fruits per plant. Papaya ranks 513 of Guyana Shares of Export (59 of market share in global exports), an economic non-traditional crop in Guyana.
With the current advent of adverse climatic conditions, increases in relative humidity, drastic changes in temperature and rainfall pattern, disease sporulation predominates. This will exacerbate chances of infection to nearby papaya farms.
Frequent monitoring and application of fungicides coupled with mechanical control techniques may be warranted, notwithstanding early detection and prevention mechanisms.
Farmers at risk are advised to contact the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute for laboratory intervention, actions and monitoring.
