The Spouses of CARICOM Leaders Action Network (SCLAN) is currently advocating for a Caribbean-flavoured reboot of the popular MTV Africa Television series, Shuga.
The television drama series is part of a multimedia campaign to encourage responsible sexual behaviour and tolerance, as well as healthier attitudes pertaining to gender and sexuality.
The original show was commissioned by MTV Networks Africa, PEPFAR (The US President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief), the Partnership for an HIV-free generation (HFG) and the Government of Kenya. It later became a hit and was aired in 40 African countries, eventually airing on over 70 television stations.
The series success is said to have been due to its vivid and uncompromising focus on love, emotions and sexual behaviour. It is lauded for increasing the number of persons who have been tested and treated for AIDS, a reduction in sexually transmitted diseases, more careful choice of partners by women and public discussion of taboo subjects.
SCLAN has made presentations to the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) urging support for the reboot of the show.
SCLAN has also been expanding links with major international organizations; hosting a side event at the United Nations General Assembly in collaboration with the Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) on September 24.
First Lady of Guyana and Chair of SCLAN, Sandra Granger, was also invited to speak in the Strategic Dialogue on Promoting the Health of Women and Girls through Collective Efforts at the 2018 Concordia Annual Summit in Partnership with the Bush Institute and at the PEPFAR 15th Anniversary Reception.
