Dear Editor,
The election of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States has not only surprised most of the Caribbean/Americans, but has many of them on edge as to what will be their future under his administration but in my humble view, they have nothing to fear because Trump is not a failure. He is a “go getter”. He achieved everything he set out to do. Imagine a non-politician defeated 17 Republicans in the primary and he defeated the powerful Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State,
Senator and First Lady, without the backing from top Democrats including two former Presidential Candidates, Mick Romney and John McCain as well as the Bushes, and a large number of influential Republicans. However, it seems as if some of them will have a change of heart and work with him in the interest of the country.
It is not a secret that the President elect is not courteous at times and openly criticizes people who do not share his views and during his campaign made some unfortunate statements about Muslims and
Hispanics, but during the last few weeks before the elections he was more Presidential and we hope that this trend will continue.
What is important at this juncture is that he has pledged to unite the country and I have no doubt that he will get support and guidance from stalwarts like Rudy Giuliani, Chris Christie, Ben Carson et al. He is an excellent and successful manager and no doubt will recruit the best advisors in various fields to assist him in his tremendous task. What is also in his favour is that Republicans control both the Senate and the Congress and although a large number of lawmakers might not see eye to eye with him he ought not to have strenuous opposition to push through his Bills. What is important and needs urgent attention is the appointment of Supreme Court Judges. It is crucial that at least one be appointed soon to replace Justice Scalia who died several months ago and stop the 4 – 4 deadlock that now exists.
British Prime Minister, Theresa May was invited by the President elect to
visit Washington when the UK Head of Government called Trump to offer her congratulations. This is a good start in his new role. Far too many negative things are being said against the incoming President – questions like when he will jail Hillary, when he will deport the undocumented aliens and when he will build the Wall; these questions are asked while groups are carrying out demonstrations in several states protesting the election of the billionaire. There is no justification for protests. The electorates have spoken — rightly or wrongly and we will have to wait and see. He should be given a fair chance to carry out the Herculean task that lies ahead.
