While suicide continues to be a serious issue in Guyana, several governmental and
non-governmental organisations (NGO) have got onboard with the aim of spreading awareness and at the same time, boost self-esteem.
An NGO called the Caribbean Voice, which has been on the forefront of suicide prevention since it was initiated in September 2014, launched “My Self Esteem (ME)” at the Cara Lodge, on Friday.
According to the Vice President of the organisation, Bibi Ahamad, “ME” is a new initiative designed to boost self esteem primarily in youths.
She continued that the initiative is simply a pocket-sized card – a gentle reminder – which would be issued to persons who would be required to affix their signature after making a pledge.
The card entails motivational words and numbers to help-lines so when a person is attacked by thoughts of suicide, the card would serve as a reminder of the pledge they took and an on the spot access to advice.
“When a person’s self esteem is low, it can lead to suicidal thoughts or even attempting or committing suicide,” Ahamad said.
The first persons to sign on were singing sensation, Lisa Punch and television personality, WR Reaz.
