– vendors given one week to put themselves in order
A decision to temporarily suspend the operations at the Merriman Mall has been taken by the Mayor and Councillors of Georgetown. This is according to a statement issued by the municipality which advised that as of yesterday,
there would be a temporary suspension of operations at the Mall which is situated between Orange Walk and Cummings Street, Bourda.
According to the statement, the Council observed that the area is usually left in a very untidy state which is inconsistent with the vision to make Georgetown clean and green.
“The Council would be giving the vendors who operate in the area a one week ultimatum to put themselves in order, before they can operate in the area,” the statement added.
The wholesale vendors who operate in this vicinity were invited to a meeting with Clerk of Markets, the Mayor and Town Clerk. It was during this meeting that it was agreed that the area would be transformed so that it can be cleaned and made attractive.
The vendors agreed that all stalls would be of one colour and size for uniformity. Also, at the meeting the vendors asked that adequate lighting, toilet facilities and security be provided.
Town Clerk, Royston King said the vendors must comply with the decision of Council.
“The Municipality is in the process of rehabilitating all of its facilities. Therefore, some persons may suffer temporary inconvenience but this would be beneficial to all,” added the statement.
