Led by half centuries by Kimani Melius and Tijourn Pope, Windward Islands defeated Jamaica by 46 runs when the Regional U15 50-over competition commenced yesterday.
Windward Islands batted after winning the toss and posted a respectable 204-8 off their reduced quota of 45 overs due to a rain. Melius and Dhan-raj Cepal gave them a bright start with an opening stand of 51 before Cepal was bowled by Romaine Jacob for four. Jacob then removed Tahj Tanernier for 10 before Roberto Simpson sent back Micah Joseph for nine to leave Windwards at 100-3.
But Melius held the innings together, hitting eleven fours and one six before he was bowled by Simpson for a matured 79 off 63 balls.
The level-headed Pope then steadied the lower order, striking six fours before he was run out for 56 off 96 balls. Romaine Jacob snared 2-45 and Simpson 2-30.
Jamaica reply got off to a bad start when Cazari Charles removed Okachie Brown for three, but Kirk McKenzie and Zavier
Burton stabilised the chase with a second wicket stand of 42.
However, after McKenzie went for 21 (1×4) and Burton was run out for 24 (3×4), Jamaica struggled to maintain the required run rate.
Losing wickets at regular intervals as Windwards bowlers maintained a steady line and length.
Geordae Seymour and Andrew Blake added an unbroken 69 for the ninth wicket as Jamaica ended on 161-8 in 45 overs.
Seymour slammed three fours in scoring 41 from 58 balls while Blake hit two fours in his 23 (2×4). Jahseon Alexander claimed 3-29 and Simeon Gerson 2-27.
Meanwhile, there was no play in the other two first round matches due to rain. Guyana were scheduled to play Trinidad and Tobago at Albion and Barbados were set to take on Leeward Islands at Enmore.
The competition continues today with Guyana facing Leewards at the National Stadium, Barbados playing Jamaica at Albion Sports Complex and Trinidad and Tobago matching skills with Windward Islands at Enmore.
