Despite Guyana’s runner-up quarter-miler athlete Stephan James of Running Brave Athletic Club missing
the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) CARITA Games qualifying 400m U-20 standards of 48.00 seconds at the trial last Thursday (8 March) at the Police Sports Club ground, he was still competent in achieving to 200m timings easily.
James, who is known for a magnificent 400m sprint, clocked 21.3 seconds in the 200m ahead of rival, Chavez Ageday who also qualified for same event. The slated standard for this event was 21.50 seconds.
Coach of the Running Brave athlete, Julian Edmonds who started his coaching career in the 1990’s, disclosed yesterday afternoon that James was a bit disappointed when he did not ran the qualifying standard of the AAG in the 400m at the trials after placing so much emphasis on the event during his training sessions.
Edmonds stated that James sessions would be mainly in demand of the 400m since he’s a better quarter-miler runner than a 200m sprinter.
The coach also explained some of the reasons which would have contributed to the athlete not running the assigned time of the Association.
He explained by making reference to AAG first developmental meet a few weeks ago where the athlete who ran faster timings than the AAG standards at International Meets met stiff competition in 400m.
The race which comprised of experienced 400m athletes like Leslain Baird of Guyana Defense Force (GDF), Alton Seaforth of Rualites’ Athletic Club (RAC) and Shawn Semple of Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC), saw James sprinting a cool 48.8 seconds leaving his competitors to battle for the other top positions in the race.
Edmonds said the reason for the 48.8 seconds was because James knew that the athletes we good runners and with that he executed and won the race, “The different senior names in the 400m made him ran a faster time since he knew what his competitors were capable of doing.”
The further stated that the athlete was a bit ‘more casual’ at the trails in the 400m as the level of competition was not comparable to the AAG developmental meet with the senior athletes and that made him ran a slower time.
Regardless of the fact of James not reaching the 400m standards, Edmond noted that it’s scary what James can do in the 200m since he’s not doing any specific training for that event. “With specific training in 200m it would be scary to imagine where he would be since he will be able to cut down a lot of time in the race”
James who came fourth in the 400m finals in Jamaica last year at the CARIFTA Trials will be looking to return with a medal in his pet event (400m) and also the 200m as he undergo training for the upcoming games which is slated April 6th – 9th in Bermuda.
