An Essequibo Coast select XI defeated Vijay Surujpaul XI by 59 runs in a feature U-17 40 over cricket match organised by Coach Forbes Daniels last Sunday at Golden Fleece.
In a match which was reduced to 28 overs due to rain Essequibo Coast select XI batted first and managed 157-6 in 28 overs. Wazim Karoon led the batting with an unbeaten 36 and was supported by Raj Parbattie who scored 33 not out, Devon George 31 and Mark Gonsalves 20. Vijay Mohan was the pick of the bowlers for Surujpaul XI with 2-21.
Ricardo Peters who claimed 4-32 and Andy Dass 3-14 then combined to restrict Surujpaul XI for 98 in 21 overs. Mohan 18 and Tameshwar Shekar 13 were the batsmen that reached double figures. Karoon was adjudged to man of the match.
Coach Forbes Daniels told Kaieteur sport that the teams will meet again today in a 50-over affair to assist the players in preparation for the Inter County U-17 tournament, while Surujpaul said the players are thankful to Daniels for organising the game since they were underprepared.
