– addresses party’s comments on Murray/Shepherd Investigation
Commissioner of Police Henry Greene posited yesterday that perhaps the members of the PNC/R need to get up to date on the Murray/Shepherd investigation before commenting on the matter.
In their weekly press briefing last Friday, the party members called “The reluctance of the Government of Guyana and state agencies to conduct thorough and impartial investigations on matters that affect the welfare of citizens”, an issue of “great concern.”
The matter under contention being the deaths of Police Asst. Superintendent, Ivelaw Murray and Police Constable Kevin Shepherd, which occurred in early July. The PNC/R called the deaths mysterious when they spoke of the Commissioner of Police’s initial dismissal of the incident as a murder/suicide despite evidence to the contrary.
According to the party, the evidence suggests the need for a full investigation to bring some closure to the matter and relief to the grieving families of the dead officer and police constable.
But Police Commissioner, Henry Greene told this newspaper that the Guyana Police Force has launched a full investigation into the matter and that investigations are continuing.
The PNCR also pointed out that they were in possession of the autopsy report and the issue of Murray having committed suicide through two fatal gunshot wounds to the head as well as the conflicting accounts of the relatives of both deceased policemen call for full disclosure on the part of the police force. They called on the Guyana Police Force to “provide, for the benefit of the public, all the information in their possession.”
Greene responded to this comment by pointing out that this is exactly what the force has done for the entirety of the story’s unfolding. To highlight his point, the Commissioner noted that at every step of the investigation, pertinent information was disseminated to the public through the media. Greene mentioned a number of these instances: the autopsy findings, test results for gunpowder residue on ASP Murray’s hands and the opinion of the handwriting expert on ASP Murray’s suicide note.
He went on to say that everything that they have in the investigation has been shown to the media.
However, he added that if the PNC/R knows of anything that investigators are not seeing perhaps they should volunteer that information to the Police.
The final assertion by the PNC/R was that there should be a proper and impartial investigation into the matter until which time the credibility and image of the police force will remain “in question.”
To this Greene responded “this is what we do all the time. It is assumed that a police force should do this” in reference to running impartial investigations.
